CHARACTER FACTS
» Name: Rufus Shinra
» Canon: Final Fantasy VII
» Reference: Here.
» Canon Point: Post Final Fantasy VII, before Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children
» Gender: Male
» Age: 25 years old (as stated in On the Way to a Smile: Case of Shinra.)
CHARACTER INTERPRETATION
» Appearance: Rufus is a well-dressed, smart and refined individual. He measures in at about 5’9” with a slender, toned build. He has bright, blond hair which is usually slicked back with gel, piercing blue eyes and a pale complexion. Rufus comes from money and dresses in high quality clothes, he’s often found wearing suits and is most typically known for his striking, white suit. Everything about his appearance screams wealth; from the designer clothing he wears, to his manicured nails, to his posture and the way he regards people - looking down at them from the end of his nose. Appearance means a lot to Rufus and he takes great care in looking his best (usually with the help of various members of staff he’s hired).
» Suitability: N/A
» Orientation: Rufus’s sexuality is never really given in Final Fantasy VII. Although he has working relationships with both male and female characters from the game there is a sense of detachment from others. Judging from Rufus’s personality I would imagine that he would have the desire to fit in, which would lead me to believe that he is predominantly heterosexual. As far as canon information goes Rufus’s sexuality is unknown.
» Personality
Before the events of Final Fantasy VII, in Final Fantasy Before Crisis, Rufus features as a main character. During this time he leaks information about Shinra Electric Company to a small rebel faction named Avalanche with the agenda of disrupting his father’s business. Rufus’s plan to destroy his father is apprehended but rather than expose his son as a traitor Rufus’s father sends Rufus aboard and decides to tell the public that Rufus is away on an “extended assignment overseas”.
Early on in Final Fantasy VII Rufus is promoted to president of the Shinra Electric Company by Sephiroth murdering his father; mere minutes after the killing Rufus appears on the scene, calm and composed, and simply accepts the position of president. This role is something he’s been scheming to achieve for years and rather than mourn the death of his late father he effortlessly eases into the position with a smile and a nonchalant shrug. Rufus’s core desire for power, rather than wealth, is stated repeatedly throughout the game. He likes being in control and achieves this by whatever means necessary, one of his most influential catchphrases is:
“I'll control the world with fear. It takes too much to do it like my old man. A little fear will control the minds of the common people. There's no reason to waste money on them.”
Why exactly it is that Rufus has this intense need for power and control is never really delved into during the game. With little love for his father this power is not something Rufus mimics from his father, however I believe this base need for control comes from years of neglect that Rufus suffered from his parents as a child. To be in control not only means that Rufus is at the centre of attention, that everyone is hanging on his every word, but in his eyes it means that he doesn’t need to match up to anyone else’s standards. As far as Rufus is concerned he doesn’t need that affection he missed out on as a child so long as he has the public’s attention.
When addressing the people of Gaia as a public figure Rufus is well-spoken, composed and altogether charming. He is very capable of making himself seem like a decent, caring human being and the people of Gaia believe this fantasy completely. It’s a role that Rufus plays well and there are only a very select few who can see through it’s performance.
Rufus takes great care in his appearance, he is more than vain; he is narcissistic. One of his most common gestures in the game is a hair flip which he does regularly to punctuate his speech. He dresses impeccably and as well as his outward personality he takes great care to maintain a smart, attractive appearance. This is another aspect of Rufus which contrasts his father, while the late president was overweight, dressed in a motley assortment of colours and fits of clothing and had lost most of his hair to a combover. Rufus strives to avoid those poor choices.
Resourceful and intelligent Rufus consistently plans ahead. When his father was designing the Shinra headquarters Rufus insisted that he add a secret escape route in case of disaster. This escape route was later used by Rufus when the building was under attack by Diamond Weapon*. Not only is Rufus intelligent but he’s calculating, he uses whatever resources he can to get himself out of trouble. When Sephiroth summoned meteor (a catastrophic force more than capable of destroying the entire planet) Rufus used Cloud and his friends as scapegoats, trying to execute them to give the public a targeted figure to transfer their aggression onto. Rufus is more than happy to wipe out all of Avalanche, a group he helped create, just to relieve the burden of dealing with the responsibility of the current situation.
Rufus cannot tolerate stupidity, especially when it comes to work. He’s cold and sarcastic in private, often shooting off hurtful comments at people who he knows respect him. When Heidegger loses track of Cloud and company Rufus snaps at him, telling him how useless he is, and when Heidegger responds with awkward, nervous laughter Rufus tells him to shut up and to stop that “stupid horse laugh”. Another example of his sarcasm is when Rufus first meets Cloud; Cloud realises the threat that Rufus poses not only to Avalanche but to the world in general, and challenges him. Rufus not only laughs this off, but nonchalantly adds “oh dear, looks like we won’t be friends then”.
“I've heard that no one's ever seen him bleed or cry.”
This is a common rumor circulated around Gaia in regards to Rufus’s personality, outwardly he is a calm, composed and seemingly unaffected individual. Behind closed doors I believe that he has moments of doubt and insecurity. These anxieties are unknown to most, if not all, people who know Rufus as he chooses to internalise most of those feelings; believing them to an unnecessary weaknesses that only hold him back. That being said, that doesn’t mean that he doesn’t have moments of doubt and worry, he simply chooses not to let others see them.
As previously mentioned, Rufus had a terrible relationship with his father. He seems to have no love for him and shrugs off his death with little feeling. Rufus’s mother is never mentioned in the game so it is assumed that she either died in childbirth or that she severed connections with the Shinra family early into Rufus’s life. Due to these unstable relationships Rufus doesn’t feel particularly close to anyone, but rather than letting this upset him, he decides that this is, in fact, an easier way to live.
The only group of people who he seems to have any trust in at all is the Turks. Throughout the game they are the select few who Rufus actually listens to, in particular Tseng - the leader of the Turks. They are his agents, who Rufus feels comfortable with tasking almost anything to. Rufus is closer to them than he realises, and although he would never admit it, they are probably the closest thing to “friends” that he has.
Additionally it’s worth noting that later installations of Final Fantasy VII (in particular Final Fantasy VII Advent Children) Rufus shows some hints of remorse for his actions as president and makes an attempt to right the wrongs of the past. He even invests time and money into a charity known as “World Regenesis Organsaition” in the hopes of rebuilding lives and homes that were affected by the meteor disaster. The incarnation of Rufus I am currently playing, however, has no such remorse!

[ The video display turns on to reveal a perfectly groomed, blond man. His expression is calm and controlled, despite the skin on his neck being pulled tight under the Amat collar. He speaks, choosing his words carefully and his tone alludes to a warmth that isn’t really there. Rufus talks to his would-be audience with a perfectly formed smile, one that is so flawless in its making that those who recognise him will know the exact the facade he’s undergoing. ]
Hello. Let me introduce myself, I am Rufus Shinra of Shinra Inc. [ There may be some hints of a condescending tone that slip in after that statement, a crack in his perfect veneer of politeness. ] -- ah, but I’m sure many of you are unaware of the Shinra Electric Company and what we do. Don’t trouble yourself with those details.
I’m here to offer you a reward, [ He nods in an encouraging manner. ] yes, I would like to give you the opportunity to receive -- [ A half-hearted chuckle and Rufus combs his hair back loosely with his fingers. ] -- well, whatever it is in my power to grant you for one, small, insignificant thing.
I want information.
[ He pauses. ]
That’s all, just a little bit of information about this place. Naturally, I would rather speak to you all face to face, I find using mobile communication devices like this a little awkward.
Simply let me know where you are and I will try my utmost to come and find you, then we can strike a little deal.
[ Despite the fact that he’s still smiling there’s a cool, iciness to his blue eyes that doesn’t quite seem as warm as it initially did. ]
Anything you want.
» Third Person Sample Choice: (PROMPT THREE)
Ruffians; penniless, jobless, hopeless scum. Rufus sneered out his icy insults as he cursed his situation. He despaired as to why it was that he had been put together with this disgusting caliber of people. Half of them barely acted like human beings. Uneducated, demented beasts who periodically crashed together in a filthy orgy to prolong their sad, little existences.
His collar was tightening by the day, Rufus was finally coming to terms with the fact that what these plebs had said had been true and he was beginning to run out of options. All efforts he had made to remove the collar himself, or to get one of these fools to remove it for him, had ended in disaster.
The reality of his situation was beginning to dawn on him; he was going to have to use one of the people here to loosen the collar. The very thought of being intimate with anyone here perturbed him, of course he wasn’t going to enjoy it. What were they really capable of? Most of the inhabitants of this place were brain-dead infants who could barely look after themselves, let alone please anyone else.
Rufus groaned at the very thought, who could he use? Tifa? Well, she was attractive enough, shame about her mouth. Always prattling on like an old maid on a mission. Then who? Men? The thought caused Rufus to shudder, Reno? Cloud?! The very idea was so utterly pathetic he found himself laughing desperately.
“What a sorry bunch.” He voiced, shaking his head dismally. “Ah, beggars can’t be choosers though. I suppose I’ll pay Tifa a visit.” Lucky Tifa.
